GENERAL GEOLOGY AND DEPOSIT

This area includes metasediments of basement complex of Precambrian to Early Paleozoic age. The bed rock in most places composed of slate/slaty shale interbedded with metasandstone overlain by deformed concretionary laterite to laterite clay soil.

The lateritic clay soil occurrence extensively covers the area especially around the Kakini Hill and its surroundings. The Kakini Hilltop shows steep sided, flat topped, laterite-capped hill with thickness of 7m.

However, the thickness of the lateritic soil varies from place to place. By taking the average from the whole area, the laterite lies between 50cm to 2.5m. The lateritic soil with compact to concretionary laterite at hill top was deformed, with fracture lines in N-S direction, some quartz veins cut through and shows quartz pebble inside mixed with clay and iron oxide coat at bottom layers with some of the quartz veins appearing on the surface.

The bedrocks underlie slaty clay interbedded with metasandstones lying in N-S direction with dip 40-90’. Wet slate shows dense texture and slaty foliation, purple gray to yellow brown colour with quartz veinlet.

Metasandstones and metasiltstones show evenly granular fine grains, thin bedded and massive, green gray to yellowish brown colour. Quartz veins which cut through inside bedrock are milky quartz, of discontinuous size 1-100cm width and 50cm-15m length in mostly N-S direction.

The gold deposit in this area is an alluvial in stream gravel and plain but alluvial at hillside and slope. By observation from old pit holes, and making test pitting, gold deposit was found from ground surface in laterite soil to depth 1-2m at the plain and to depth 7-9m at the hill top. The lower layer of laterite soil has more concentration of gold than upper soil layer; the average thickness of paydirt is about 1m with more thickness at the hillside. The concentration varies from place to place. In stream sediments it is about 2.5g/m3 while in the plains it’s about 1.0g/m3. The average concentration is about 1-1.5g/m3 of 1m paydirt. The gold deposit extends more than 1sq km around Kakini Hill. Most of the gold is powder and flakes with some nuggets.

Gold was found in some of the test pitting carried out on soil samples from quart vein in bedrocks which indicates that the gold in the area is from quart veins.

Conclusion and Recommendation
After due geological mapping, test pitting and observation from the local artisan miners, and our knowledge and understanding of the processes of orogenesis and distribution of deposits, there is possibility of the gold deposit extending over 1sq km and some from quart veins.

From the above observation, the area around the Kakini Hill is an interesting prospect for mechanized mining operation with the gold concentration of 1-2g/cm3 of ore in 1sq.km with an average depth of 1.0m.
